Prompt: On the outskirts of a large city, a snuffling noise coming from a sewage pipe alerts you to the presence of a living creature. The player can investigate what’s there and find a small creature/monster (your choice). The creature speaks your language, and tells you it’s trying to get into the city, but its kind have been forbidden from entering. It sees you as someone who could help.
Why does it want to enter the city? Can its reasons be trusted? How will the player help, what will they learn, and is it possible for them to profit from the situation?
[[Let's find out...->A scene is set ]]NARRATOR: You head toward the distant city of Tornton. Between you and your destination is thick marshland - too thick to traverse by foot or horse.
NARRATOR: Thankfully, a number of huge stone bridges stretch out over the swampland to help traders and other denizens come and go.
NARRATOR: It is atop one of these bridges that you currently step. Alone. Or so you think.
[[Continue.->The Bridge]]NARRATOR: As your sabatons trudge against the bridge, you hear an unsual sound beneath your feet. One could reasonably describe it as... snuffling.
[[Investigate the noise.]]
[[Ignore it and continue on.]]NARRATOR: Climbing down the side of the stone bridge, you find an exposed sewer pipe. That would explain the smell, which practically burns the hairs in your nostrils off.
NARRATOR: Waving the fumes away from your face, you notice a small figure huddled inside.
NARRATOR: You squint to get a better look at the creature. It quickly squirms to face you, and you are greeted with...an unusual sight.
NARRATOR: This ugly little thing resembles a goblin in shape and stature, but its skin looks wet, as if it's perpetually melting. It beams a horrific smile your way, Clearly, its skin condition is something it lives with.
[[Continue-> Introductions]]NARRATOR: You ignore the unusual sound and press on across the bridge, towards Tornton.
NARRATOR: Who knows what fun and epic adventure you missed out on?

[[Of course, you could explore that strange snuffling sound.->The Bridge]]//The creature grins at you.//
[[Moo? Like a cow?]]
[[What are you doing in the sewer?]]
[[My gods you're ugly. What ARE you?]]
[[//Pull the creature out.//]]
[[//Draw your sword// Out of there right now, fiend!]]
[[//Leave the creature to its own devices.//]]
NARRATOR: As Moo's pleas get more distant, you press on across the bridge, towards Tornton.
NARRATOR: Who knows what fun and epic adventure they had in store for you?
[[Of course, you could see what he has to say.->Meet cute]]NARRATOR: Moo hesitates for a moment. It's barely noticeable, but your keen senses aren't so easily fooled.
MOO: I-I have treasure! It's stuck right behind me! Pull me out, and it's all yours!
[[You'd hand over all your treasure? Just like that?]]
MOO: See, I was just...hiding, from a huge bird! Bigger than even you! Would have swallowed me up whole!
MOO: But it's gone now, and, as you can see, I'm stuck. Could you help me out of here?
[[Why should I help you? What's in it for me?]]
[[Hang on, I have more questions.->Meet cute]]
CREATURE: Kind Stranger! It's a miracle that you came along! Name's Moo, and I could really use a hand.
NARRATOR: Its words are like nails down a chalkboard - enough to make you wince. Every breath it takes sounds like the wet snuffling of a sickly pig.
[[Continue->Meet cute]]NARRATOR: Moo is almost perplexed by the question.
MOO: Wow, that's really mean! All jokes aside, I'm Moo, and I'm in a bit of a sticky situation right now. So, if you're all questioned out...
[[//Use World Knowledge to determine Moo's species//]]
[[Hang on, I have more questions.->Meet cute]]
NARRATOR: The creature fidgets, attempting to pull itself out. It does appear to be trapped in the sewer pipe.
CREATURE: Please, no!
[[//Pull the creature out.//]]
[[Why should I help you? What's in it for me?]]
[[//Stab the creature//]]NARRATOR: Moo scrunches his face at the suggestion.
MOO: N-no. No, not "like a cow".
NARRATOR: He forces a smile.
MOO: Now...if you could help me out of here, I'd be so grateful.
[[Hang on, I have more questions.->Meet cute]] NARRATOR: Moo's confused face speaks volumes. Gathering your thoughts has taken longer than you intended.
MOO: H...hello? You okay?
[[You're a Yolyb. Why do you not know what species you are?]]
[[Hang on, I have more questions.->Meet cute]]
NARRATOR: You catch Moo off-guard. You sense that something is amiss, but you can't quite put your finger on it.
MOO: W-well of COURSE I'm a Yol-yip! But...I'm a bit of a lone wolf, you see? Just Moo and Moo. And right now, Moo needs a hand...
[[Yol-yip?! What are you hiding from me?]]
[[Hang on, I have more questions.->Meet cute]] NARRATOR: You hear frustration in Moo's piercing tone.
MOO: I'm not lying, okay? I'm just frustrated and stuck in this stinking sewer pipe.
MOO: So PLEASE, if you would kindly help me out, we can continue this conversation like civilised beings!
[[Not before you answer all of my questions.->Meet cute]] MOO: Well, we'll split it then. What do you say?
[[I'll think about it.->Meet cute]]
[[//Pull the creature out.//]] NARRATOR: You feel your body drifting in the black void, and you've never felt better. The warm embrace of a million marshmallows envelops you.
NARRATOR: Is this what death feels like, you wonder.
NARRATOR: After an age or a moment, light dances on the void's rippling surface somewhere above you. You don't even need your eyes to see it.
[[Continue->Visions]]
NARRATOR: The light forms moving images. Footsteps - YOUR footsteps - walking over the bridge.
NARRATOR: The light disperses into nothingness. It reforms again, as you see an armed guard gesticulating at you angrily. He swings a fist towards you, and the scene collapses.
[[Continue->The Heart of the City]]
NARRATOR: Your body rocks back and forward in the black ether. Then, the light returns. You are stumbling through Tornton's unmistakable streets, its denizens side-eyeing you as you pass.
NARRATOR: The image dissipates, only to reappear as you approach a door. Your hand raises to knock.
NARRATOR: In an instant, you're alone in the dark once again.
[[Continue->Where am I?]]
NARRATOR: Then, you feel your body violently pulled through the darkness, as if tied to a thousand horses at full gallop.
NARRATOR: You open your eyes and the light practically blinds you.
[[Continue->Unfamiliar territory]]
NARRATOR: You find yourself sitting in a cosy bedroom. You feel warmth in your hand. You look down to see what you're holding, and it's the hand of a robed figure. They're lying on a bed right in front of you. Confused, you let go. The figure doesn't react. Are they dead? Did you kill them?
NARRATOR: You're suddenly very aware of the side of your face, which is swollen and painful. You look around to get your bearings.
[[Continue->What do?]]
WOMAN: Out here, love. Let me know when you're done.
NARRATOR: The kind voice emanates from behind the door.
[[Continue.->What do?]]
NARRATOR: The room looks...normal. A wardrobe, a dresser, and a large mirror are placed carefully along the walls. Behind you, a door.
[[//Open the door//]]
[[Hello? Anyone?]]
[[//Check the body//]]NARRATOR: The woman looks at you for a moment and laughs.
WOMAN: We get all sorts in here, I swear...
WOMAN: Look, I've got a line full of customers all waiting, so if you don't mind.
NARRATOR: She ushers you down a corridor and out of another door.
[[Continue->Ending 1]]
NARRATOR: You emerge onto the bustling streets of Tornton. Beside you, a row of people are queueing. A woman at the front of the line shoots you a brief smile, before sliding in behind you and shutting the door.
NARRATOR: You look around, perplexed. A man, next in the queue, looks at you.
[[Why are you here?]]
[[//Leave him be//]]
MAN: We're all here for the same thing, so cram your judgement up your arse!
NARRATOR: The man turns away from you. You are none the wiser.
[[//Leave him be//]]
NARRATOR: Moo waits to see what you do.
[[I sense a...darkness in you. What are you hiding?]]
[[That felt funny... did you feel it too?]]
NARRATOR: Moo's hardened gaze softens somewhat.
MOO: Felt? Felt what, exactly? I felt nothing.
[[That...spark between us. Some kind of attraction.]]
[[Nevermind.-> Stand off]]
NARRATOR: Moo raises a single eyebrow.
MOO: Oh...OH, well. Yes. I felt it too. Why don't you pull me out and we can explore these feelings?
NARRATOR: He doesn't sound like he felt it too.
[[Come here you beautiful little bastard!]]
[[No, nevermind.-> Stand off]]DISEMBODIED VOICE: As this one would put it...let's get down to...brass tacks.
NARRATOR: The voice comes from nowhere - and everywhere - at the same time.
[[With whom am I speaking?->Introductions]]
[[Fuck this, I'm out of here!]]
[[So, you're telepathic. What ARE you->Introductions]]
[[Neat trick. Time to die! //Attack//]]DISEMBODIED VOICE: Before you leave, I have something of interest to your kind.
[[Something like...what?->Questions for Moo]]
[[I've no interest in some deal with a demon. I'll have no part in your scheme.->farewell]]
MOO: Perhaps I should reintroduce myself. I am Moo. This one would call me a demon or ghost, but I am neither.
NARRATOR: Moo speaks with a confident, authoritative boom that commands attention, digging into your mind.
MOO: I am not from here. Everything I know about your world, I know from this one, and others before him. And I can help you - if you'll repay the favour.
[[Continue->Questions for Moo]]
MOO: I am...trapped here. In this space. But not in this body. I can...move...to another.
[[By touching me, right? That's why you wanted me to get you out....to possess me?]]
MOO: No. I am of another plane. Another place in the cosmos. It is...difficult to explain to your kind.
[[No, I think I get it. You're an interdimensional entity. And you've...possessed this Yolyb?]]
MOO: Close enough.
NARRATOR: Moo's tone changes to one of...surprise?
[[Continue->Questions for Moo]]MOO: Correct.
[[And now you want my help? That's rich.]]
[[Hang on. So your plan was to hide in a sewer and hope someone would come along to get you out? That's a terrible, TERRIBLE plan.]]
MOO: You seem like a reasonable...thing. There is something I need in the place - city - ahead. If you let me...in, I may have something for you in return.
[[What, treasure?]]NARRATOR: Moo pauses, collecting his thoughts.
MOO: I...do not know.
[[So you tried to trick me into possessing me? Praying on my good nature? Why in the realms would I help you now?->And now you want my help? That's rich.]]MOO: Incorrect.
[[Then what?]]
MOO: I can teach you how to move...to others.
[[You can teach me to possess people?! Where do I sign up!]]
[[I've no interest in learning any of your dark arts.]]
[[You know what? I've changed my mind. I want no part in this.->Leave]]NARRATOR: Moo waits for your questions.
[[So, you're a monster from another...country?]]
[[Help how?]]
[[This one? Who is this one? Me?]]
[[I don't want any part of this.->Fuck this, I'm out of here!]]
[[Neat trick. Time to die! //Attack//]]MOO: We...come to an agreement.
[[And how do we do that?->Contract]]
[[Actually, I've changed my mind. I want no part in this.->Leave]]MOO: It is...not a choice. Part of me will stay with you...after I'm gone.
MOO: You are free to ignore it, if you wish.
[[Fine. What do we do?->Contract]]
[[No thanks. No deal. I don't want to be any part of this.->Leave]]MOO: Touch this body and...let me in. You will be present, but I will control.
[[Alright, so I'll be a passenger in my own body?]]
[[Actually, I've changed my mind. Good luck!->Leave]]MOO: Correct.
[[Alright, let's do it.->Touch Moo]]
[[On second thoughts, this is all getting too weird for me.->Leave]]
NARRATOR: The feeling itself is nearly indescribable, but you liken it to floating. You see everything, but you're not in control.
NARRATOR: Your eyes look down to inspect both sides of your hands. Your hands run over your body and head, yet you feel nothing.
MOO: This will be...different for you. Strange.
[[It's disorientating. And we're talking in my head now. That's also disorientating.->A new journey starts]]NARRATOR: As Moo looks up to the bridge, you see the Yolyb's lifeless body keeled over.
[[That's not going to happen to me, is it?]]
MOO: I was...uncertain, until I became you. Your...mind is stronger. You will live.
[[Off to a great start then, aren't we! Next time, please give me a head's up before we do anything that might kill me.]]
NARRATOR: As your body takes step after step, it occurs you don't know why Moo is heading to the city.
[[So, why are you so desperate to reach Tornton? What's there?]]
[[Actually, I'm not comfortable with this arrangement. I want you out. Now.]]MOO: A...Dreamer.
[[A Dreamer? What's that?->days are dreamed]]MOO: I cannot leave until I find a...conduit. The last one knew of this conduit. A....dreamer. And now, I know.
[[So I'm stuck with you until I find this dreamer? Great. Where's this "Dreamer" then?->days are dreamed]]
[[A Dreamer? What's that?->days are dreamed]]MOO: The Dreamer, or conduit, lies in a home in...Tornton. The last one knew that others visited the Dreamer to...feel good.
MOO: The dreamer shows them things. Things that make them...happy.
[[Continue-> dream dream dream]]MOO: They think the Dreamer...shows them their biggest desires. They are incorrect.
MOO: The Dreamer shows them...other places. Other spaces. Other planes. Planes where these things are true. That is how I'll...return to where I belong.
[[So there's another place where I'm, say King? Is there one where I'm YOU?]]MOO: There are...infinite places. Infinite spaces. Infinite planes.
[[So there IS one where I'm you?]]NARRATOR: Moo ponders this for a moment.
MOO: Correct.
NARRATOR: He doesn't sound thrilled at the thought.
[[So...why haven't I heard of this Dreamer before?]]MOO: Like the last one, they are...unwelcome...among your kind.
[[I see.->conduit unwelcome]]
NARRATOR: You finally reach the huge city gates. A single guard spies your approach.
[[You need to pay the guard two gold. Check my pockets.]]
[[//Lie// You need to pay the guard one gold. Check my pockets.]]
[[//Say nothing//]]NARRATOR: Moo roots around in your pockets, revealing two gold coins. He stops, running them between his fingers.
NARRATOR: When the coins are nice and fingered, he approaches the guard.
[[Continue->Toll]]NARRATOR: Moo walks you up towards the guard.
GUARD: Toll's two pieces.
NARRATOR: Silently, Moo holds out two pieces of gold, placing them into the guard's upturned hand. He pockets them, turns, and whistles up to ramparts above the door.
NARRATOR: Within moments, the large doors open. The guard ushers you inside with a nod.
[[Continue->Inside the city]]NARRATOR: Moo walks you up towards the guard.
GUARD: Toll's two pieces.
NARRATOR: Silently, Moo holds out one gold piece, placing it into the guard's upturned hand. The guard looks down at the single gold piece and back at Moo - and you.
GUARD: Are you thick? Two pieces. Two.
MOO: Why did you tell me an incorrect amount?
[[(Lie) Sorry, must have gone up.->Pay him right]]
[[I just wanted to see if you'd do it.->Pay him right]]NARRATOR: Finally inside the city, Moo uses the Yolyp's knowledge of the place to find the Dreamer's location.
NARRATOR: You arrive at an unassuming house on a quiet city street. Moo knocks, and an elderly woman greets you. He pays with your coin, despite your protestations, and you head inside.
[[Continue->dreamer's paradise]]
NARRATOR: Moo reaches into your pocket, pulls out another gold piece, and places it in the guard's still-upturned hand.
NARRATOR: The guard shakes his head, pockets the coins, turns, and whistles up to ramparts above the door.
NARRATOR: Within moments, the large doors open. The guard ushers you inside with a nod.
[[Continue->Inside the city]]
MOO: Should I pay him, or wrap my hands around his neck until he stops breathing?
[[Sure, throttle the gate guard. Great idea.->uh oh]]
[[Don't attack him! You'll...I'LL...have around 50 arrows in you! Just pay the man - gold's in my pocket.->pay up]]
[[Just stare at him. Maybe he'll back down?]]NARRATOR: Moo and the guard engage in a tense stare off.
MOO: This is achieving...nothing.
[[Just pay the man - gold's in my pocket.->pay up]]
[[Keep staring, he's about to cave.]]
NARRATOR: The guard shakes his head. He winds up and punches you right in the face. This isn't the first time you've been punched, but it IS the first time you've been punched and not felt a thing.
[[Continue->inside but bruised]]
NARRATOR: Your body falls to the floor and you hear coins spill out of your pocket. The guard collects four - double the toll, spits on you for good measure, before turning and whistling to the ramparts above the gate.
GUARD: That's what you get.
NARRATOR: The doors to the city open up before you. The guard reaches down, picks you up by your clothes, and practically throws you inside.
GUARD: Now fuck off before I have you thrown in the pillory!
[[Continue->Inside the city]]NARRATOR: The elderly woman leads you down a corridor to another door. She opens it, leads you inside, and shuts it behind you.
NARRATOR: You find yourself sitting in a cosy bedroom. There's a wardrobe, a dresser, and a large mirror placed carefully along the walls. What takes centre stage is a bed - a bed with a robed figure lying on it.
[[Continue->time to say goodbye]]MOO: This is the conduit. The dreamer.
[[Okay, well touch him and give me my body back.->thank you]]
[[You know what, Moo? I'm going to miss you.->thank you]]
[[Are you sure you don't want to have some fun with my body before you go?->thank you]]MOO: Thank you for helping me. It has been...something.
NARRATOR: Moo sits your body down by the bed and reaches out to take the Dreamer's hand. In a flash, you feel the darkness, the bubble, the flood of Moo rush out of your mind. And just like that, Moo is gone.
[[Continue->Got my body back, baby!]]NARRATOR: Feeling rushes back into your body. You take a moment to adjust, take one last look at the dreamer, and then head for the door.
NARRATOR: The elderly woman greets you and leads you outside.
NARRATOR: You've finally made it to Tornton - your desination. But now, you have some otherworldly power on hand. It could make your life much easier, but at what cost?
NARRATOR: After all, there's always a cost.
ENDNARRATOR: You reach up to grab Moo's hand, but as you do, you sense something. Something dark.
[[//Ignore the feeling//]]
[[//Focus on the feeling//]]NARRATOR: Putting you better instincts to rest, you reach out and grab Moo. As you do, a rush of darkness courses through your body. Simultaneously, you experience the agony and infinite joy of a universe rendered by disharmony.
NARRATOR: A cosmic longing for balance tips towards an dark insatiable curiosity. A need to explore atrophy as a force for creating something universally unique. A new masterpiece suffusing timelines at the expense of all.
NARRATOR: Within seconds, your head feels like it's being filled by a bubble. As it expands, it pushes everything aside; thoughts, memories, consciousness.
NARRATOR: Within seconds, or perhaps aeons, you pass out.
[[Continue->Dark Passenger]]NARRATOR: You feel an otherworldly presence tickle the tips of your fingers. Moo is hiding something...something dark.
[[//Pull your hand away//]]
[[<Pull him out anyway>->//Ignore the feeling//]]MOO: What are you doing? Give me your hand a pull me out. Now.
NARRATOR: Moo's demeanour visibly shifts - his eyes narrow to slivers. If he could leap out of there and strangle you, he just might.
[[Continue-> Stand off]]NARRATOR: As you drive your sword into the creature's torso, a fleeting voice enters your mind. You can't quite make out the words as your blade sinks further into the creature's flesh.
NARRATOR: Moos screeching yelp soon turning to gurgles, and you see something dark escape from its eyes and dissipate in the air around it.
NARRATOR: You pull your blade out and flick the creature's guts to the ground. It is dead.
NARRATOR: You climb back up to the bridge and press on towards Tornton.
[[Of course, you could give Moo a chance...->Meet cute]]NARRATOR: You walk over to the door and open it. Behind it is a kindly-looking elderly woman. She smiles at you.
WOMAN: Right, then. Hope you got what you came for!
[[What I came for? I...have no idea how I got here.->Laugh]]
[[Wait, who are you? And who was that in the bed?->Laugh]]
[[Where...am I?->Laugh]]NARRATOR: You place a hand on the figure's chest. They're still breathing. You attempt to shake them awake but there's no response.
[[Continue.->What do?]] NARRATOR: You walk away from the house, questions swimming around your mind. Maybe you'll never know what happened to you this day. Maybe you don't want to know.
NARRATOR: What you DO know is that you ended up in Tornton all the same. And you have business to attend to.
END

NARRATOR: Or, you could see what happens if you trust your instincts...
[[//Pull the creature out.//]]
NARRATOR: The creature recoils in horror.
CREATURE: H-hang on! I'm stuck! Please, pull me out and I'll do whatever you want!
[[//Pull the creature out.//]]
[[Why should I help you? What's in it for me?]]
[[This is your last chance! Out of there now or I'll put my sword through you!]]
[[//Stab the creature//]]NARRATOR: After locking eyes with the smiling creature for a moment, you turn around and climb back up to the top of the bridge.
NARRATOR: As you begin to cross the bridge once again, you hear Moo cry and plead for you to come back.
[[//Give the creature another chance//->Meet cute]]
[[Press on]]NARRATOR: You tap into your encyclopaedic knowledge of the land's flora and fauna, trying to ascertain Moo's species.
NARRATOR: After mere moments, you determine that Moo is a Yolyb. You’ve never seen one in the flesh, as they tend to avoid contact with higher races. However, you’ve seen renditions of them in books.
NARRATOR: You heard rumours a group of Yolyb's attempted a coup in the Tornton some years back.
[[Continue-> Yolyb]]NARRATOR: Overcome with emotion, you reach out and grab Moo. As you do, a rush of darkness courses through your body.
