Dark Quest 3 is a turn-based, card-driven rogue-lite by Brain Seal.

I joined Brain Seal as lead writer after Dark Quest 3 was already in early access. Most of the job was the cards. A shop, a trap, an event, a room full of skeletons: each one is a few lines that have to carry a rule, a bit of the world, and where there's space, a joke, all on something the size of a playing card.

A turn-based fight on a dark cavern bridge: four heroes and a purple-robed wizard face a pack of goblins, a hand of named cards dealt along the bottom of the screen.

I also wrote the game's Steam page: the description, the feature list, the short pitch up top. That's a different job to the cards. It has to say plainly what the game is and who it's for, without overselling it.

The narrator's barks were mine too. It's a voice that talks over the run, half cheering you on and half enjoying it when things go wrong. Dry, a bit mean, and the part of the job I had the most fun with.

A boss encounter in a blue ice cavern: the party of four stands on a frozen ledge beneath a huge hooded sorcerer worked into the cave wall.

Dark Quest 3 left early access with its 1.0 release in May 2023, and has held a Mostly Positive rating on Steam since. For a game built by a two-person team, that's a good result.
